How we rank sources
Not all sources carry the same weight. When sources disagree, we follow the highest tier available and say so on the page.
- Tier 1: primary and official. The temple administration and the HR&CE Department of Tamil Nadu, the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India, the Archaeological Survey of India, and UNESCO. Always preferred for timings, procedures, names and official descriptions.
- Tier 2: scholarly. Peer-reviewed research, academic books, university publications and recognised historical publications. Preferred for historical interpretation and dating.
- Tier 3: traditional. Temple chronicles, religious texts and traditional accounts. Cited as tradition, scripture or religious belief, and labelled as such.
- Tier 4: secondary. Established reference works, news reports, travel publications and heritage organisations. Used as starting points or for context, and never treated as authoritative when an official or primary source exists.
Blogs, forums and travel websites are not cited as authorities. AI output is never treated as a source.
History, tradition and belief
Srirangam is a living place of worship with a deep store of sacred narrative. We respect that tradition and do not dismiss it, but we do not present it as documented history either. On our pages you will see these labels:
- Historical record supported by inscriptions, official records or scholarship.
- Traditional account from temple tradition, sthala purana or hagiography.
- Devotional tradition beliefs and practices of devotees.
- Scholarly interpretation where historians offer a reading or dating that may differ from tradition.
- Documented practice or Official schedule for current temple practice described by official or published sources.
- General guidance for practical advice that is customary or common sense rather than an official rule.
Time-sensitive information
Timings, festival dates, fees, visitor procedures and facilities can change at short notice. We check them against the official HR&CE portal, show the date of that check, and link to the official source so you can confirm before you travel.
Known gaps
This guide does not yet cite Tier 2 scholarly works directly. Some historical sections currently rely on official descriptions and on general reference works, and are marked accordingly. Adding scholarly citations is part of our ongoing review.
