| From | Distance |

By air
Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ) serves the city with domestic and international flights. Taxis and app cabs connect it to Srirangam.
By train
Srirangam railway station is the closest, about 1 km from the temple. Tiruchirappalli Junction (TPJ), 9 km away, is the main station for the region and is served by trains from across India.
By road and local transport
Tiruchirappalli is connected by road to the major cities of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, with government and private buses arriving at the Central Bus Stand. Town buses, autorickshaws and cabs connect the city to Srirangam. On festival days, expect heavy crowds and possible traffic restrictions in the temple streets.
Where to stay
- Temple accommodation: the temple's Devotees Stay Home has no online booking, and the HR&CE portal says booking has been suspended since 25 June 2026 for renovation. For information it lists +91 94864 82246. See facilities.
- Srirangam and Tiruchirappalli: both have private hotels and guest houses. Staying in Srirangam puts you within walking distance of the temple; the city has a wider choice.
During major festivals, especially Vaikunta Ekadasi, book well in advance.
What to wear
General guidance
We have not found a published official dress code for Srirangam. Modest, traditional clothing is customary at Tamil Nadu temples and is the respectful choice:
Men
Dhoti (veshti), or trousers with a shirt or kurta.
Women
Saree, half-saree, or churidar or salwar kameez with a dupatta.
Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops and revealing clothing, and follow any notices at the entrance.
What to carry, and what to leave
- Carry: drinking water, small change for archanai and prasadam, sun protection for walking between enclosures, and any medication you need.
- Leave: footwear at the footwear storage room. HR&CE places it, with the cloak room, on the west side of the Nanmukhan Gopuram.
- Photography: do not photograph the deities in the sanctum, and follow the notices for other areas.
A route through the seven prakarams
The traditional approach walks from the outside in, from the streets of the town to the sanctum. Prakaram numbers follow the HR&CE portal, where the first is the innermost.
- South Rajagopuram, seventh prakaram (Kaliyuga Raman Thiruchuttru). Enter through the 236-foot, 13-tier tower into Chithirai Street, lined with homes, where the Chithirai festival car is kept.
- Sixth prakaram (Trivikrama Cholan Thiruchuttru). Uthira Street. Leave footwear and bags at the storage and cloak room by the Nanmukhan Gopuram.
- Fifth prakaram (Akalangan Thiruchuttru). A large group of halls and shrines: the thousand-pillar mandapam, the Sesharayar Mandapam with its carved horses, the Ranga Vilasa Mandapam and the shrines of Ranganayaki Thayar, Ramanuja and Chakrathalwar. HR&CE notes a viewpoint south-west of the Ranga Vilasa Mandapam from which the gopurams and the vimanam can be seen.
- Fourth prakaram (Alinaadan Thiruchuttru). Pass through the Karthikai Gopuram to the Garuda Mandapam and the Garudalwar shrine.
- Third prakaram (Kulasekaran Thiruchuttru). Enter through the Aryapattal gate on the south, by the golden flagstaff. The Paramapada Vasal is on the north side.
- Second prakaram (Rajamahendran Thiruchuttru). Reach the Gayatri Mandapam and have darshan of Sri Ranganathar.
How long this takes depends on crowds and on the darshan queue. Allow extra time on weekends and festival days, and time your arrival around the official closures. For more on what you are walking through, see the architecture section of our history page.
Planning your day
The 6:00 to 7:15 AM darshan period is short and is followed by a long closure, so many visitors either come very early or plan for the 9:00 AM reopening. Our one-day itinerary shows how to combine Srirangam with nearby temples around these timings.
Nearby temples and places
Approximate distances by road from Srirangam:
- Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval (about 2 km): a major Shiva temple, one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams.
- Amma Mandapam: the main bathing ghat on the Kaveri at Srirangam.
- Uraiyur (about 6 km): the Kamalavalli Nachiyar Temple, a Divya Desam.
- Rockfort Ucchi Pillayar Temple, Tiruchirappalli (about 8 km): a Ganesha temple on a rock above the city.
- Samayapuram Mariamman Temple (about 15 km).
Check each temple's own timings before you go. For the other Divya Desams of the area, see Srirangam and the 108 Divya Desams.
Visiting with elderly family
A visit involves long walks on stone, mostly barefoot, across a very large complex. Plan rests, carry water, avoid the hottest part of the day, and ask at the temple office about any assistance available. See what to ask on arrival.
Safety and good practice
- Buy tickets and make donations only through official channels.
- Keep valuables to a minimum in festival crowds.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case you are separated.
