Why pilgrims call it Bhooloka Vaikuntam

For Sri Vaishnavas, Srirangam is not simply a large temple. It is Vaikuntham, Vishnu's own world, set down on earth.

In Vaishnava usage the word Koil, the temple, refers to Srirangam alone. Eleven of the twelve Alwars, the Tamil poet-saints, sang 247 hymns of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham to Sri Ranganatha here. Ramanuja, the great teacher of Visishtadvaita, managed and reformed the temple and wrote his Sri Bhashya at Srirangam.

The complex covers about 156 acres, and India's UNESCO submission notes that some scholars consider it the largest functioning temple in the world. Its outer enclosures are lived-in streets, so the temple is also a town. In 2017 it received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit for cultural heritage conservation, reported at the time as a first for a Tamil Nadu temple.
